The 4786th Test Squadron was a US Air Force squadron stationed at Edwards Air Force Base, and was instrumental in the testing of the YF-12, a fighter version of the A-12, the precursor to the SR-71 Blackbird. The squadron was initially named YF-12/SR-71 Test Force in 1965, but was renamed to 4786th Test Squadron in 1970. This “MACH III” insignia was worn by members of the 4786th Test Squadron during this period.
