This is the WW2-era insignia of the 709th Bombardment Squadron. This squadron was activated in early 1943, and flying B-17s attacked various targets in Europe. It bombed the Normandy beaches on D-Day, and hit logistical targets during the Battle of the Bulge. It was deactivated shortly after the war, but was later reactivated as the 709th Military Airlift Squadron, which still exists today.
